Godsdawn Receive it

A daily reflection at first light

Before the world wakes, the world prays.

In every tradition that believes in God, the same thing happens at dawn. Someone rises in the dark and turns toward the One who made the morning. Godsdawn is a place to keep that hour.

The hour

Dawn does not belong to one religion. It belongs to all of them.

Set the traditions side by side and something quietly astonishing appears. They disagree about a great deal. They do not disagree about this hour.

Long before anyone agreed on anything else, people were getting up in the dark to speak to God. They still are — right now, in every time zone, the line of first light is moving across the earth, and it is never moving across an empty world.

Today's reflection

On rising in the dark

The hardest part of the dawn prayer is not the prayer. It is the five minutes before it — when the blanket is warm and the room is cold and no one in the world would know if you stayed.

That moment is the whole thing. Not because God needs your discomfort. Because something in you needs to learn that it can be moved by something other than its own comfort. So you get up. Nothing dramatic happens. The room is still cold. You are still tired.

And then the light comes — as it was always going to, whether you rose for it or not — and you find that you are awake to receive it. That is the only difference, and it is the entire difference. The morning was never earned. You were simply there when it arrived.

Tomorrow it will be cold again. That is not a problem with your faith. That is the practice.

Three movements

What the hour is made of

I

Remembrance

God is not discovered at dawn. God is remembered. The morning brings nothing nearer — it only clears away what had been standing in the way since yesterday.

II

Gratitude

No one has ever earned a morning. It arrives anyway, for the faithful and the faithless alike. That it arrives at all is the first thing worth saying thank you for, and most days it is enough.

III

Return

Every tradition gathered here agrees on one mercy above the rest: that you may begin again. However the night went — the day is new. And so, it is promised, are you.
